Welcome to our website

Holy Cross Church was opened by Bishop Amigo on 14 September 1904 - the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. Originally serviced from Lewisham, the new church’s first parish priest, Fr Edward Escarguel, was installed on 7 January 1905. The church had to wait until July 1960, however, to be formally consecrated.

Holy Cross was one of over 20 churches built in the early years of the 20th Century under the financial patronage of Miss Frances Ellis (1846-1930), an heiress who converted to Catholicism and was received into the Church in January 1901... [Read more about our history]

A PASTORAL YEAR IN LEWISHAM
The 10 parishes of the Lewisham Deanery are holding a Pastoral Year from the feast of Christ the King 2008 to Christ the King 2009. It will consist of a series of talks, reflections, workshops and prayer with each parish hosting a particular theme. The overall theme is Come and See – honouring the invitation we have all received from Christ.  The various activities will be sacramentally based with five key targets in view: (1) Parents (2) Catechists (3) Teachers (4) Youth Leadership and (5) Clergy. The year will be launched at Good Shepherd Church, Downham by the Dean, Canon John Kavanagh and Bishop Pat Lynch, on Sunday 23rd November at 7.30pm. There will be some publicity material available soon and parishioners should please pass on the word, attend as many of the key events as possible, and encourage others to do likewise. We need to keep the initiative in our prayers that the seeds sown across the year will find a welcome home, lead others to Christ and promote a greater understanding of our role as Church.

HOLY CROSS CATFORD AND GRENADA, TWINNING GROUP
Update on our Twining Project with Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Grenada, West Indies.
The twinning group wishes to thank all parishioners for their continued support during the rebuilding of the parish church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Grenada, as well as the reconstruction and improvements to the school which was almost destroyed in some areas by the hurricane. Currently the Church building is in its final stages of completion. Holy Cross fundraising support has provided the lighting elements built into the ceiling. The Twinning Group is now considering estimates for the reconstruction of a much needed library and an IT suite in the local school. As you will appreciate this project is ongoing, therefore regular updates will be provided in the parish news letter. Meanwhile, sincere thanks to everyone for making a big difference to another community many miles away from Catford.

Outreach link to Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Beaulieu, Grenada, West Indies. The community there is trying to re-establish their church after it was devastated by hurricane Ivan in 2004. We hope to sponsor their efforts and make a difference in their lives by sharing some of the blessings that God has shared with us.
