Holy Cross Church was opened by Bishop Amigo on 14 September 1904 - the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. Originally serviced from Lewisham, the new church’s first parish priest, Fr Edward Escarguel, was installed on 7 January 1905. The church had to wait until July 1960, however, to be formally consecrated.
Holy Cross was one of over 20 churches built in the early years of the 20th Century under the financial patronage of Miss Frances Ellis (1846-1930), an heiress who converted to Catholicism and was received into the Church in January 1901... [Read more about our history]

CATHOLICS IN HOSPITAL
May we remind you that if a Catholic is admitted to hospital they should tell the hospital staff that they are a Catholic and that they want the Catholic Chaplain to visit them. In some hospitals staff will not pass on the religion of patients to others, including the Chaplains and the information will only get through if the Catholic makes the point of saying they want the Catholic Chaplain to visits. It is a privilege for a Priest to visit the sick.
Gift Aid
Under UK Tax Law, charities can reclaim the basic rate tax deducted from the donations and regular giving received from UK taxpayers. Holy Cross Church is a part of the R C Diocese of Southwark which is a Registered Charity No. 235468.
Monetary gifts have to be identifiable; we must know who the gift is from and the donor (giver) must agree that the donation (giving) is to be treated as received under the Gift Aid Scheme. We have Gift Aid Envelopes for the use of occasional givers which bear a Gift Aid Declaration that the donor must complete together with their name and address.
For regular donors, we encourage giving by standing order direct from their bank to ours; and in junction with this we ask for a general Gift Aid Declaration to be made that covers all payments made after the signing of the declaration, into the future. There is no point completing a general Gift Aid Declaration and then continuing to give money through the collection plate at Mass, as we do not know who the gift is from and so cannot reclaim any tax.
Gift Aid Envelopes, Bank Standing Order forms and general Gift Aid Declarations are available at the Contact Corner in the church.
Times of services at Holy Cross, information about all parish activities and groups as well as the relevant newsletters can be found on this website. Most parish activities take place in our parish centre, Hartley Hall, which is situated in the car park to the rear of the church (on Culverley Road). You are welcome to join us for coffee every Sunday after the 10.00am Mass.
Grenada Twinning Project
In 2004 Grenada was devastated by a hurricane – many buildings were destroyed along with the nutmeg trees that provided the island with their main source of income. It was decided to twin Holy Cross Parish with Beaulieu Parish near St George’s in the south of the island so that we could support each other in a variety of ways. Beaulieu Parish Church and the two Parish schools had been destroyed by the hurricane. A Twinning Committee was set up and continues to be chaired by Joe Baptiste MBE, a member of Holy Cross Parish. If you are a newcomer to the area, or to the Catholic faith, we welcome you to our parish family here in Catford. The church has been here since 1904, and the parish is made up of some 500 families, with 600-700 people worshiping here every week.
