HOLY CROSS AND GRENADA TWINNING PROJECT Holy Cross Parish and School twinned with Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Beaulieu, Grenada, following Hurricane Ivan five years ago. The hurricane caused huge destruction all over the island; homes and buildings lost their roofs, and many buildings, including Our Lady Help of Christians Church, were destroyed. The export of nutmeg was the main source of income for the island, and due to the destruction of the nutmeg trees the economy is suffering greatly. Holy Cross Parish raised funds which bought the lights for our new Lady Help of Christians Church, as well as a much-needed resource room for Beaulieu School. The second part of the twinning project supported three members of the parish visiting Grenada for one week. The aim of the visit was to identify future areas of development and need. The three representatives, Pat Peters, Head Teacher of Holy Cross School, Mary Riley, Head of Infants, and lead co-ordinator for the project within the school, and Lesley Allen, parish representative, spent a very rewarding and insightful week in Grenada. They all felt the visit was a great privilege and opportunity. There was a wonderful sense of a close community who looked after each other. The island was beautiful and the people very welcoming and hospitable. They visited Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Beaulieu School, the temporary school and church in Vandome, as well as a nursing home and parishioners and catechists within their homes. There was much identified need within the schools as they lacked resources such as pencils crayons, erasers sharpons simple reading and picture books, at times pencils were shared or small stubs of pencils used. The playgrounds were a dust bowl in the dry season and full of mud in the rainy season. Beaulieu Parish were extremely grateful for the help they had received from Holy Cross Parish and are looking forward to developing stronger links and contacts for the future. Holy Cross has devised an action plan for the next phase of the project which will be to collect as many consumable items to be sent quickly to Beaulieu schools and parish and to fundraise towards the refurbishment and resurfacing of the playground. The priority for the church is to assist financially towards the chairs needed which are being made by a local carpenter, this will then complete the work needed in Our Lady Help of Christians. What can you do now?
