SVP KERALA
FLOOD APPEAL
The St Vincent de Paul Society is running a national appeal to
raise funds for the flood disaster in Kerala, southern India, which has killed
hundreds and displaced around a million people. Kerala is the most Christian
state in India. Christianity arrived there when St Thomas the Apostle visited in
52 AD. It has the largest number of churches in India and the SVP has more than
36,000 members in Kerala. The Church and the SVP have been playing a major role
in assisting the many thousands of people who have suffered loss in the floods;
the monsoon season is set to continue until early September. Please contribute
to this SVP appeal by donating to this weekend’s second collections and joining
us for a fundraising Coffee Morning after 10am Mass on Sunday (2nd
September).
Donations may also be made
via the SVP website www.svp.org.uk, or cheques made payable to SVP Twinnage can
be sent directly to - SVP Twinnage Disaster Fund. PO Box 318. Whitstable. CT5
9BS
Please
remember our sisters and brothers in Kerala in your prayers.
LEWISHAM DEANERY – SPIRITUAL PILGRIMAGE.

takes place from 4pm to 5pm on Saturday 15th September at St William
of York Forest Hill 4 Brockley Park, SE23 1PS 020 8690 4549. Other events

A REALLY
BIG THANK YOU
Lesley Allen wishes to thank all at Holy cross for giving of their
time and talents so generously at the “Holiday at Home” three weeks of
activities for older people and those living with dementia this summer at
Brownhill Baptist church hall, St Andrews church hall and the finale week at
Hartley hall.
230 people attended over the course of the week at Hartley hall and 23 people volunteered led by the fantastic team of yellow coats who were there every day. Some of our wonderful young people from the parish YSVP and other young people from the parish were a huge asset to the week’s fun.
A big thanks to Remo Finaldi and family for leading a wonderful concert of Italian songs and flamenco dancing and to Gwen Williams for making hundreds of delicious cakes, George and Sheila Mascall for generously providing 80 portions of pie and mash from their family business, and Tony Green for playing everyone in and out with his accordion each day , Patrick Sullivan for taking hundreds of photos, those who gave their time to wash up, set up, clear up, provide technical support, drive people and of course Fr Doug for being a good sport and dressing up as Elvis for our rock and roll finale day.
Well done everyone for a successful ecumenical three weeks.

TWENTY-SECOND
SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 1/2, 2018
In the
reading from the letter of St. James we are urged to be “doers” of the Gospel,
not just listeners. Being a “steward” of God’s Word is a matter of listening to
the Good News, embracing the Good News and putting the Good News into action in
our day-to-day lives. And whenever we are uncertain as to what decisions to
make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us:
We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with
the Gospel, and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed and
poor.
