THE TRANSFIGURATION: After the miraculous, dazzling brightness of the transfiguration of Jesus and the conversation between Jesus, Moses and Elijah, Peter, who seems always good for a word or two, said, “Let’s build three tents;” that is, let’s not just stand here; let’s do something. Immediately, the group was enveloped in a cloud of divine presence, and the words here repeat the Father’s words at Jesus’ baptism. Jesus is named the beloved Son of the Father. But, there is an additional line here at the Transfiguration that is not found at the baptism. It is recorded in all three synoptic Gospels: “Listen to him.” The Father ignored Peter’s words. He simply says, “Listen to him.”
Then, Jesus was alone with the three apostles with the Father’s words still ringing in their ears. The Father had not said, “Look at him and the brilliant splendour of his body.” The Father did not have a list of things for them to do. The Father was not interested in housing. He simply said, “Listen to him.”
What should we Christians learn from this event? First and foremost, we need to listen to Jesus’ words of love for us. Then, after listening to his message, we should spread his and our love to our neighbours.
We begin to listen, first, by being quiet in the presence of the Lord in prayer. Then, secondly, we need to silently listen and understand the Word of God, the events recorded about Jesus’ life and His message. The truth of his life, of his words, of his simple presence, emerges from within us and transforms us.

- Holy Cross Parish Pastoral Council: In order to make our parish a more dynamic and a missionary parish, we are going to form a new Parish Council. As we sincerely thank the members of the previous Council, we now invite new members to take up the missions of Jesus in our parish and beyond. We have identified a number of people who can give their time and talents for the greater glory of God and the wellbeing of God’s people. They are now being contacted one by one. If you feel called to do this mission as a Council member and are able to help the parish in any special areas, please contact Fr Antony.
- Parish Questionnaire: Please do not forget to hand over this questionnaire form to the Welcome Ministers this weekend
We are looking to produce an action plan to our new Parish Pastoral Council for the coming years. In order to agree a vision for the parish and prepare the action plan, we will be issuing a questionnaire for you to complete at home. The questions will basically cover … What are the things you appreciate, or don’t, in Holy Cross? What would you like to have more of in our parish? How can you and your family support the parish and what are the areas you are willing to be involved in, in the life of the parish? Any Other Comments (please feel free with this section to raise anything)Please discuss these questions in your families and groups and bring it back next week and hand it over to our Welcome Ministers.
- SVP APPEAL FOR MEMBERSHIP The St Vincent de Paul Society is dedicated to tackling poverty in all its forms by providing practical assistance to people in need. - With respect to the current situation with the omicron variant it is important to ensure the following points are followed in our churches:
- That people displaying any symptoms of covid-19 should stay at home and not travel to church or participate in person.
- That hand sanitiser is used by everyone attending the Church.
- Concerning face masks, some form of face covering will be required in most public indoor venues, including places of worship. However, exemptions exist for various reasons: legitimate health reasons, as has always been the case.
- That there is good ventilation and air throughput in the building; in this case, because of climatic conditions, please do wrap up warmly when coming to the church as we may need to leave doors open.
- That people who are engaged in a form of pastoral ministry which involves ministry to the housebound, sick, and vulnerable, should take regular lateral flow tests to ensure they are safe to do so. These are free from the NHS.
