MINISTERS OF THE WORD [READERS]

TEN GUIDELINES FOR THE READERS
1. Prepare Prayerfully
"Study the Scriptures diligently; let them dwell in your heart" (CCC 133).
—Pray and reflect on the readings beforehand. Understand their context and meaning to proclaim them with conviction.
2. Proclaim with Clarity and Reverence
"The Word of God is living and effective" (Hebrews 4:12).
—Enunciate clearly, pace yourself and honour the sacredness of the text. Avoid theatrics; let God’s Word speak through you.
3. Serve Humbly
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition" (Philippians 2:3).
—Your role is to serve, not perform. Avoid drawing attention to yourself; focus on the message, not the messenger.
4. Honour the Liturgy of the Word
"In the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to meet His children" (Dei Verbum 21).
—Treat the Lectionary with reverence. Bow to the altar, pause before/after reading, and handle the book with care.
5. Dress with Dignity
"Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 6:19).
—Wear modest, appropriate attire that reflects respect for the liturgy and your ministry.
6. Embrace Ongoing Formation
"All Scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching" (2 Timothy 3:16).
—Deepen your understanding of Scripture through study, workshops, and spiritual guidance (GIRM 101).
7. Respect the Assembly
"The Church is the Body of Christ" (CCC 805).
—Make eye contact, project your voice, and ensure all can hear. Be mindful of those with disabilities or language barriers.
8. Live the Word You Proclaim
"Be doers of the Word, not hearers only" (James 1:22).
—Let Scripture transform your life. Model the Gospel values you proclaim (CCC 131-133).
9. Collaborate with St Mary's Council
"There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:4).
—Coordinate with priests, and musicians to ensure unity and harmony in the liturgy (GIRM 99).
10. Trust in the Holy Spirit
"The Spirit will teach you what you should say" (Luke 12:12).
—Pray for guidance before reading. Trust that God works through your efforts, even in imperfection.
